On Thursday, May 12 at 18.15 will be held an online event entitled "The dilemma of peace between theory and practice. The legitimacy of force in the service of justice"

Peace is not simply «the absence of armed war or spilled blood». This is what Emmanuel Mounier wrote in his "Christians and peace", printed in 1939, while Hitler raged. Now the publisher Castelvecchi has decided to republish the work in a new edition with an updated preface by Stefano Ceccanti, constitutionalist and deputy, and the introduction of the philosopher Giancarlo Galeazzi. With the invasion of Ukraine, these pages of the founder of the Christian Community Personalism return, unfortunately, of very close relevance.

Stefano Ceccanti, Marina Calloni, and Iacopo Scaramuzzi will retrace the dilemma of peace between theory and practice from the pages of Mounier to our days, researching in philosophical thought, between references of our Constitution and concrete choices, the balanced use of force in the service of justice.

Not an exercise in acrobatic abstraction because, as Mounier noted "in a world where some want war or at least do not exclude it in their remedies, to reject any action that might involve risk means to reject any resistance, since the risk is everywhere. And this risk must be taken while making a much more heroic effort to avert it".

Introduced and coordinated by: Federico Gilardi.

The book that will be discussed: Emmanuel Mounier (Author), Giancarlo Galeazzi (Presentation), Stefano Ceccanti (Preface), Paola Baiocco (Translator), Christians and peace, Rome, Castelvecchi, 2022.

The event is organized by the University Library in collaboration with the Centre "C. M. Martini" of the University of Milan-Bicocca
