From 15 June to 2 July 2022 at the University’s Central Library (building U6, Piazza dell'Ateneo Nuovo, 1, Milan) it will be possible to visit the exhibition “Even wars have rules. The international humanitarian law…in a nutshell” organized by the Red Cross of Milan.

Each war is a tragedy that entails unnecessary suffering, destruction and loss, both human and material. Indiscriminate attacks, abuse and violence are often aimed at the moral destruction of people, directly affecting the dignity of the human being. But even wars have rules, unfortunately they are not always respected by the parties involved and often forgotten, with tragic results.

The set of rules aimed at protecting those who suffer from wars, or those who do not take part in hostilities, is called International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

The Red Cross is its guarantor and promoter. In addition to prescribing what is attackable and what is not, the IHL limits the tools and methods of war that can be used in order to limit the unnecessary suffering of the enemy and the civilian population.

The exhibition “Even wars have rules” was created with the aim of raising awareness among citizens about the importance of respect for human dignity even in armed conflicts, investigating specific themes such as the protection of civilians and cultural heritage, the treatment of prisoners of war and the protective function of the emblem of the Red Cross. Panel after panel, the rules of the Geneva Conventions and other international treaties will be brought to light. In order to not forget that, even in war, humanity must always prevail.

The exhibition is composed of twelve panels depicting photos taken in the many theaters of war in which the International Committee of the Red Cross operates, accompanied by in-depth texts.

This initiative is part of the campaing “The international humanitarian law…in a nutshell” promoted by the Red Cross of Milan in 2022 to spread the IHL on social media through a series of graphic cards with general information, ideas and focus.

For more information about the campaign and for extra materials, please consult the page of Milan Committee of the Italian Red Cross.

The exhibition will open on Wednesday, June 15 at 17.00.
